During our October 2019 student leaders to Rarotonga, one of our students broke her foot on a day hike. Our student received great medical treatment at the hospital, however there were no crutches available for her, and after further discussion with local health officials, we realised there is a crutches shortage on Rarotonga.
At Future Leaders Academy we're helping to fix this shortage, launching Expedition Southern Crutch. Collecting second hand, good quality crutches from across New Zealand and Australia and sailing them from Auckland to Rarotonga in May 2022.
After a practice sail in February, we will set sail under the expert guidance of the Waka Hourua crew, in May 2022. We will set off on the adventure to sail from Auckland, New Zealand to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, on a traditional Pacific Island sailing vessel. The expedition will involve a crew of 16 people and the duration of the journey will be weather dependent and expected to take between 14-20 days.
We have two spaces available for students to join us on this exciting expedition, and we are now seeking expressions of interest from those who are keen to find out more. This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an adventure of a lifetime, experience personal growth and culture like never before and to be part of a great cause. Not for the fainthearted, this opportunity would suit confident senior students with some leadership experience, who are interested in being part of this challenge. Having a keen interest or some experience with sailing would also be an advantage.
The expedition is subsidised for our two student places at a cost of $3,000 GST inclusive per student. This cost covers the voyage, food and accommodation. Flights to and from Auckland, and return from Rarotonga, will be extra.
